Post-Op Instructions
Proper care after a dental procedure is essential for healing, comfort, and long-term success. At Smile Dental Care in Plainsboro, NJ, we provide clear, personalized instructions to help you recover safely and avoid complications.
As a general guideline, wait at least two hours before eating to allow anesthesia to wear off. Eating too soon may lead to accidental injury since your mouth may still be numb.
Below are helpful post-operative guidelines. Always follow the specific instructions given by your dentist for your unique treatment.

General Post-Operative Care
Taking the right steps after your procedure promotes faster healing and reduces discomfort:
- Wait at least two hours before eating
- Avoid chewing near the treated area
- Take prescribed medications as directed
- Use cold compresses to reduce swelling
- Maintain gentle oral hygiene
For mild soreness, over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help—just be sure to follow your dentist’s recommendations and labeled dosing instructions.
Root Canal Therapy Aftercare
Mild soreness is normal for a few days following a root canal. Avoid chewing on the treated side to protect the temporary restoration.
If you experience increasing pain, medication reactions, or a lost filling, contact Smile Dental Care promptly.
Crowns, Bridges, and Veneers
Temporary restorations require extra care. Avoid sticky or chewy foods and brush gently. When flossing, slide the floss out instead of pulling upward.
Some sensitivity is normal after placement. Saltwater rinses and over-the-counter pain relief can help. Your bite should feel natural within a few days—if not, contact us.
White Fillings (Bonding)
Sensitivity to hot and cold is common after treatment. Avoid extreme temperatures for a few days.
Afterward, resume your normal oral hygiene routine to maintain your fillings.
Scaling and Root Planing Recovery
Your gum may feel tender for a few days. Rinse with warm salt water two to three times daily and continue brushing gently.
Avoid hard or chewy foods, and use a cold compress if swelling occurs. Contact us if symptoms persist.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Rest is essential after an extraction. Keep your head elevated and change your gauze as needed. Avoid straws and smoking to protect the blood clot.
Stick to soft foods such as:
- Yogurt
- Mashed potatoes
- Pudding
- Ice cream
- Soup
If bleeding continues beyond 24 hours or healing seems delayed, call our office immediately.
